What difference can a connected classroom make?

Advantages from teacher's perspective:

  • Re: putting course materials online
    • Forced organization - must carefully plan the course locations.
    • Course materials are always accessible if connected to the web
    • Students have access even when not in class - before for preparation, after for follow-up, access if absent, access after the course is finished.
    • Communication with peers/colleagues without restrictions of time (synchronous vs asynchronous) or distance
  • Re: Using online resources
    • Highlights the advantages of multimedia - textual, visual, abstract, interactive, social
    • Access to timely information - e.g. Dodge article in current issue of L&LT
    • No duplication, hole-punching, and distribution in class.
    • There's good stuff out there.
  • Can't teach in the traditional way!!!

Disadvantages from the teachers perspective:

  • Good materials take time to create.
  • Got to plan and construct well ahead to get things up on time.
  • If access is down - need a backup plan, like paper-based or local site within the LAN
  • Students with no or poor access.
  • Not enough access during class.
  • Tech glitches can distract from teaching/learning.
  • Can't teach in the traditional way!!!
