About Eva

I grew up in Montreal, where I went to school in French. Growing up, I often visited Switzerland, from where my parents emigrated, and where my extended family was located.

Education

I am a lifelong learner. After an undergraduate degree (architecture) and masters (aménagement) and a few years of work in industry (architecture and graphic arts), I completed a PhD in education (focusing on mathematics). Most recently and following the pursuit of a Visual Arts Certificate in Studio: Textiles/Fashion from NSCAD (Class of 2017), I am re-learning to design and create websites.

Academic work

Since 2005, I am a full-time faculty at Mount Saint Vincent University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where I teach pre-service and in-service teachers how to teach mathematics. My research there focuses on the relationship between making (art), mathematics and learning.

Previous work

Previously, I worked as a graphic artist, webmaster and architect, both in Canada and in Switzerland.

Art

My art has always been very eclectic in terms of style, subject matter and medium, although there are some leading threads:

  • there often is a mathematical element.
  • aesthetics is always a consideration; this is often inspired from the Concrete movement, which gave mathematics a prominent role, but also incorporates the Japanese ideal of beauty.
  • Investigation of visual effects come into play, as do symmetry and patterns.

I use a variety of art or craft media and techniques, including:

  • painting
  • drawing
  • photography
  • printing (paper and textile)
  • weaving
  • beadwork
  • origami
